I just bought a 1977 Coleman Valley Forge. The door lock is intact but the owner did not have the keys. How does one get keys made for the original Coleman pop out door handle?

I had only 1 key for my 1984 Coleman Columbia. No hardware store had the key blank and the 1 RV dealer I stopped at didn't have key blanks. Pure luck had me drive past a locksmith with the popup key in my pocket. Every bit of wall space in his place had key blanks. He had it and I had 4 more keys made, $2 each.

As for not having any key, I would think a locksmith could create a key for you. There may be numbers on the lock and you might be able to contact Coleman/Fleetwood or the lock manufacturer for a new key, or it may be easier and cheaper to just replace the whole lock.

Thats the problem with camper keys. Chances are 50 people in the camp ground have the same key that will work with your storage bins and door lock.

    I think most are 1701's

you should be able to go to any dealer, all those locks are the same. heck I even bought a hitch lock last year that is keyed exactly the same. all coleman/fleetwoods use the same key, plus all TT's and 5'ers use the same lock on the storage bin doors as well. Someone you know probably has a spare.

The person who I bought my PUP from told me "If you lock it and someone really wants to get in, they'll just cut the canvas". They could also just pull back the velcro from the door and unlock it from the inside. So I didn't even bother getting the key for mine.

A lock can keep the kids out. When my son was 3 years old he disappeared as my wife unlocked the front door. He was found inside the camper.

Post any numbers on the lock, I may be able to make a copy if I have one here(or just ask a local locksmith).

The latch in question is the one that latches the flip down door/step.

    OK-- Here goes---

All Colemans up to 1996 used one key for the door lock-- its a 1101X- Available from any Coleman dealer-- 1996 and up use the 8025 key---
As long as someone didnt replace the lock- because now only the 8025 lock is available from Coleman

Easy way is the 1101X was silver-- the 8025 is gold-
both of these id #'s are printed on the original keys by the way.

You mean the key blank is the same or I can use my key to open every coleman ever built prior to 1996?

BTW, I am an honest person, I won't try that. But I do have an old Toyota key that is so worn down that it works in most 1980's Toyota's.

You will be able to open EVERY Coleman that uses the same key.

Same goes for the very popular 701 and 751 keys that I use for my camper.

Like others have said, it is just to keep the honest people or lazy burglars out.

Here is a company in NC that has keys for Fleetwood/Coleman.
I have not done any business with them, mabey someone on the fourm has and could say if they are good or bad.
They seem to have a good selection of items.

Same question.....phrased differently. I understand each lock and key has a number and if the number on your lock and my key match, they open. I also understand there may not be that many versions of the key/lock.

Did they only make 2 keys/locks, #701 and #751? So there is a 50% chance that we have the matching keys/locks? or is there...for arguments sake....10 versions of the each key/lock 701A, 701B,701C, so on and so forth.

I find it really difficult to belive that there are so many popup's out there and only 2 keys. I can understand a small # of keys like 10-20 but only 2????

In my case, the 701 is the door key and the 751 is the shower/front box key.

I am pretty sure that they are universal across brands and that there are not different versions of each. I have heard of people using popups to HTT/TT and MH that all use the same 701/751 keys. I haven't actually tried my keys in their campers but others have.

So, the bottom line as others have said is to keep all valuables in your TV unless you have a 1980s Toyota and Matt is camping near you (Just Kidding).

That is messing with my mind that they went thru the trouble of putting a lock on but only had 2 keys.

I don't remember where my Toyota Key is, I just remember that I kept it.

A 751 key is a 751 key, no matter what the lock is installed on. I've used them at work, my last pickup used it on the cap, I've seen that lock used in several places. Anyone with a 751 key can unlock any 751 lock.

As for the Toyota key working other Toyotas, it's the locks that were worn enough to allow other keys to work. Not the key being worn into another lock.

I have a used 2007 Starcraft. The 751 key works fine on the outside potty door and shower door. The 701 key for the 1/2 traveling door doesn't work the lock. It seems to want to turn it, but doesn't quite make it happen. What is the most likely reason? Is the key worn (looks kind of worn) or the lock worn out? It seems kind of ridiculous to plop down $25 to get a whole new lock and key set when everyone and their mother seem to have the same lock and key # anyway. I would like the door to be lockable for when the camper sits in storage though.

My local dealer (Fleetwood, etc.) said they could only order me a whole new one. I can do that myself. Home Depot and such couldn't help. Anyone have a spare 701 key they'd be willing to send my way so I can test the darn lock?<img src=../Images/icons/icon_smile_shy.gif border=0 align=middle alt="Shy">
