Maidstone SP is located in a remote corner of the Northeast Kingdom (far northeastern VT). It is pretty well off the beaten path, so do not expect to be conveniently near towns of any size. It is a beautiful location with many of the original rustic structures built by the CCC in the 1940s. The CG is located on the shores of Maidstone Lake, many of the sites have direct lake access. The bathrooms are fairly primitive and there are no hookups. Staff is knowledgeable and friendly, they go out of the way to be helpful. The lake itself is deep and cold, ringed by a rocky shoreline, great for fishing and paddling. This is a terrific way to experience camping on a lake with a lively loon population. If you love loon calls, it is an amazing experience to hear them call at night with the sound echoing across the water. (On the other hand, if you find their calls unsettling, save yourself the sleepless night and get a site away from the water.) Either way, it makes for an unforgettable experience.
