The park staff killed the bison. Seems like a bit of an overreaction to me, but...

(No, I'm not defending the guy who handled it first)
Unfortunately they couldn’t reunite it with the herd and it was wandering in the road and approaching people. Not yet weaned so the rangers had to make a difficult decision. Tough life , only about 30% reach adulthood

I think it's a stretch to say the "knucklehead" caused its death though, since he took control BECAUSE it was separated from the herd...

Again, not defending his actions in general.

He had no idea if it was unable to reunite with the herd. They had crossed the river Often they take a while to get the nerve to jump in. This one never got the chance to try. He pulled it from the water
