camping this summer

Two years ago, the doctor told me that I would need full knee replacement. I was getting an injection in the right knee every 4 to 5 months for pain. I starting taking joint health over-the- counter vitamin supplements last March (2022). My knee has since almost healed. No more injections, and no more pain.

I am hoping to be able to get back up to the high Sierras with my sons like I have done every year for the last five years. But right now there is almost 8 feet, if not more, of snow covering our campsite. I don't think that is going to melt off until around July. I think I'm going to have to just stick around out here on the Mojave desert for most of the summer. I have high winds out here, but no snow.

Musictom: please be aware that in the San Francisco Bay Area thieves are cutting catalytic converters off cars in broad daylight, and are armed (one fatality locally, on our walking route).

The best defense is to lay up a snaggly coil of razor wire fastened below and in the vicininty of your catalytic converter.

Man if I was you and you could swing it I would scoot that western leg over and travel Pacific Coast Highway 1.
We have done PCH before. I grew up in Watsonville (between Santa Cruz and Monterey), and just last summer we spent a week in the pup at Morro Beach.

We live in the Central Valley now, which is why we are driving through the heart of California. :)

We're about 20 minutes south of Stockton, and my daughter's family lives in The City. Yeah, it's happening all over. My check engine light came on this weekend, and my app/sensor said it was something to do with the catalytic converter. We had spent the previous night in a hotel, and my first thought was "somebody cut out my CC!!" Fortunately, that wasn't the case, but yeah, I'm well aware.

This year it will (finally) be Maine! Been a long time so really pleased to have 2 weeks to wander. And I have a friend there we are looking forward to visiting. The scuttlebutt is to depart at 2a.m. to avoid the worst of I-95. (Did that in the 80s and it worked well, was in CT by 10 a.m. but I think traffic has quadrupled since then.)

I'm kinda surprised many or some, of the comments in this thread are about crowded CG's. We normally walk around NFS campgrounds here just to say high to the few people who are there at the same time.

Hi Grandpa Don,
I just got my first shot of juice in my right knee a few weeks ago. Having no ACL for a few decades finally caught up with me. The inside cartilage is nearly bone on bone. So far so good, but I know it's a temporary fix. If you don't mind my asking, what did you take?

Another person just asked that same question. So instead of typing my answer out all over again, I'll just cut and paste the same answer here:

I am totally mystified about my knee. I was told three years ago that I would need a total knee replacement. I was getting an injection in the right knee for mild pain every 4 to 5 months. In December of 2021, the doctor gave me an injection of what he called a super lubricant. He said that it would only last about 3 to 4 months before I would need a second injection. I wish I could remember the name of that stuff. Regardless, he said it was only good for a few months. That was nearly 15 months ago. I have not had any professional interaction since.

In March of 2022, I started taking two OTC vitamins. One is called "Turmeric Curcumin". I take three 500 mg capsules per day. The other is called "Glucosamine Chondroitin". It is one tablet containing 750mg of G and 600 mg of C. I take two tablets per day. Both are not very expensive and are OTC meds.
I did not notice an improvement right away. It was very gradual. What I did notice was that I did not need an injection in the 3 to 4 months window I was told about. My knee still bothered me, but not bad enough to go back to the doctor. Little by little it just got better and better. It never hurt when I walked on it. Just twisting it sideways hurt at times. It also ached sometimes in the middle of the night.

At this point, I don't understand what is going on with it. I have no pain whatsoever! It doesn't even ache at night any longer. I do favor it a bit out of habit. And I do have to be careful not to twist it sideways or it will remind me that there is something going on there. Both of my legs are weaker, but I think that is just due to my age. I might get a little jab of pain just for a second. I have no problems walking, hiking, or climbing a hillside. I no longer wear a knee brace. I just don't need it. Though probably I should, just to be on the safe side.
I have no idea why I no longer have knee problems. I find it hard to believe that two OTC meds did what a doctor could not. Maybe it wasn't the OTC meds. Maybe I just healed. I don't know. I do know that both of my sons have back problems, and they both take Turmeric Curcumin and swear by it. I get the Turmeric Curcumin at WalMart. It's Spring Valley brand. I get the G and C from my online pharmacy for free. It is a "21st Century" brand. My Humana medical supplement gives me $50.00 of free OTC meds of my choice every quarter. I use it to stock up on the G and C, plus other vitamins every quarter.

I am sure that at some point I will need a knee replacement. At least that is what they told me three years ago. I am now 77 years old and not getting any younger. As I said in the opening sentence, I am totally mystified as to what is going on with my knee.

I do not know, nor do I understand what is going on with my knee. I don't believe that a knee that is as bad as the first doctor said it was three years ago, can heal itself. But it did! I'm beginning to think that the original doctor misdiagnosed my problem in the first place. He did show me the X-rays, and it did look like I didn't have much cartilage left in there. But maybe there was still enough. I don't know!

I did get a second opinion from another Orthopedic doctor who had both of his own knees replaced at the same time. He knew what he was talking about. He also took X-rays but didn't seem all that concerned about how they looked. In the end, he didn't think I needed a knee replacement at that point. He said that the knee would let me know when it was time. Whether the OTC meds did the trick or the knee just healed itself over time, I don't know!

If you don't mind my asking, what supplements do you use for your knees? I've been using Glucosamine Chondroitin which helps, but the left knee still isn't great. Thanks for your help.

I think I covered that in posts #37 and #38 above. It's Turmeric Curcumin". I take three 500 mg capsules per day.
