Central KY Campgrounds good for kids?

Hello,

We are taking our kids out for their first camping trip to the Kentucky Horse Park in late May and wanted to see if anyone else had been to Blue Licks Battlefield or Fort Boonesborough with kids? We have a 4 year old and a 2 year old. Our two year old loves being able to get out and run around so somewhere with easy trails would be great. We’re looking for somewhere within an hour or two of Lexington, KY so we don’t have too long of a drive. Any reviews or other suggestions?

Not from that area, nor have I passed through it. But for kids, KOAs are good, more $$$, not really any trails, but they have swingsets, pools and other stuff kidos enjoy. And they are basicly the same across the USA, so you always know what your getting.

Natural Bridge is my go-to, especially the Whittleton side. We take the pup there at least once or twice a year and backpack and day hike the area several times throughout the year. There isn’t a playground there but tons of trails in the state park and nearby in Red River Gorge.

I’ve heard a lot of people really like Whisperings Hills in Georgetown. My parents stayed there once when the Horse Park was full and they weren’t big fans. I think it was just too tight for their liking.

A little further away Big Bone and Kincaid Lake, both in northern KY, are great. Big Bone has a nice playground, lots of open space, a pool, plus the museum and live Buffalo. Carter Caves is at the further end closer to 2 hours but is another great one.

Not sure how far Mamouth Cave National Park is from you all. Lots of hikes around there although some a little more on the moderate side due to hills. I personally stayed at a state park near by the caves Which had a nice lake and trails itself. It’s been a long while since I had a two yo so not sure how enjoyable it would be for him/her though.

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone!

The horse park trip went really well. We didn’t go up to the arena for any events but the kids loved running around on the playground and riding bikes around the loops. Fishing was good at the FINS pond too! We’re trying Ft. Boonesboro in June!

Levi Jackson campground in London has several playgrounds, easy hikes, and a pool. It’s about a 5 minute drive for me. Haven’t camped there yet but I take my daughter often to hike or play. In-laws Camp there at least once a year.

It’s been years since I last went to the horse park & wondered what the campground is like. Glad to hear you enjoyed it.
