Dometic Bag Awnings

I’m going to be replacing my current dometic bag awning with a new one. The current one has cracked and is crumbling apart. My question for the group is this. Is there some type of treatment that I can apply to the new one to keep this from occurring. It’s only 6 years old. I’ve had the camper for just over a year. So this is attributed to the previous owner.

I think that is due to sun exposure. I had a 2016 that had the hard white plastic over the stitching at the top cracking apart. The bag material also became brittle. The previous owner kept it outside.

My 2018 was stored in an enclosed storage unit and I keep it in my garage. Its in 100% better shape.

Not sure on the protection but save all the aluminum parts- impossible to get. One of my dogs busted a post and having to order a new awning because I can’t order a single post- been able to get it temp fixed for now

Sun and weather exposure.. only way to avoid this, is to remove the awning when not in use.

I have to replace the six year old awning on my TT due to the same reason..

Ultraviolet light. Stored outdoors, in the heat, light and cold will take its toll.

The bag containing the Carefree awning on my 2003 Viking appears to be made of cloth covered with what looks like a think coating of plastic. I don't know the history of the camper with the previous owner/s. But I can say that the bag shows no sign of deterioration at all. I've owned the camper for about 4 years now and it is always stored outdoors. There is a cover over the shroud on my A/C unit that I replaced about 2 years ago. That thing is falling apart now. My new one will be delivered tomorrow.

First Question , is it the bag that is coming apart, or the actual awning. if it is just the bag, take it off and find a boat canvas shop, and have them make you a new bag. It's a lot cheaper than buying a new awning.
Also you are probably looking at a 6-8 month lead time for a new awning. I ordered a new one in July of 2021, got the new one in April of 2022.

I agree with this, take it off now before it falls off and causes more damage or an accident. At best your littering AND you lost your awning.

The bag is almost always the problem. That, and those lousy cheap tie strips that shred they put on them :/

My awning was just fine so I ended up sewing a new bag. There are places that will stitch your awning into a new bag (don't recall who, as I was able to do it myself but I have an industrial sewing machine). You just remove the awning from the old bag, remove the support frame and poles, mail it to them and it comes back in a new bag that you just slide into the track still on your PUP's roof.
