Don't Text and Drive

I was rear ended while towing my Aliner on Oct 28. I previously covered this in a thread titled “Aliner Rear-Ended.” The woman seemingly was texting and did not brake until way too late. As of today I am calling repairs complete. The trailer was camp ready a week or so ago but I decided to replace all 4 corner moldings so that all four match again – old were white, they only make black now. So total costs:

2020 Ridgeline Truck Repair $12,480.35

2020 Ridgeline Diminished Value $777.50

2003 Aliner $3,491.73

Rental Vehicle $4,847.89

Damaged Contents ~$200

Total $21,797.47

These costs do not include her car which was totaled.

Insurance paid $3,492 for the trailer damage. Repair costs totaled $990 ($758 parts, $232 labor for trailer frame repair, $0 for my labor) Trailer repair completion was delayed as Aliner’s supplier’s mold for the corner moldings broke. We also had a few cold days that made garage work unpleasant.

We are still “dealing” with the insurance companies. We have not received our $500 deposit return on the truck repair. We need to be reimbursed for the rental vehicle from the insurance company of the woman who hit us. They are now going to argue with Enterprise as they now say we did not get their negotiated rate. Note that they told us diddly squat before I rented.

The Ridgeline was in the shop for 84 days. Thanksgiving and Christmas did not help. The truck drove fine before repairs but the trailer hitch ($559) was shoved thru the Ridgeline’s in bed trunk which entailed replacing a $6215 part.

So, the Ridgeline is as good as new. The Aliner is probably in slightly better condition. The corner moldings needed replacement due to small cracks, new taillights and side markers replaced the cracked wrap around taillights which are no longer made. All four stabilizers now use the same driver. The rear wall is not perfect (I just pounded out the aluminum and re insulated)but the worst of it is hidden behind the spare tire. I would not recommend getting rear ended.

I agree! No fecking texting while driving, I pull over. It's illegal to text and drive, I'd like to call in to police when I see people doing it! So.sorry all that happened to you, lots of after effects!

“Negotiated price”?? Let the insurance company do that - doesn’t sound like you were in a position to be selective! Glad you are ok and your vehicle & camper are back in good shape!

That's a lot of work and stress for someone else's fault.

Learning my truck and phone capabilities has been a game changer for me. Voice commands do just about everything without distractions. I think of all the times I fumbled changing stations on the radio or finding an 8 track to play. Crazy.

Just happy you didnt get banged up in that also. It sounds like a lot of damage, they must have not stopped and been going at a decent rate of speed. So it could have been way worse. Not for the vehicals but for you. It sucks going through this.

We rebuilt our camper from the frame up, this is my biggest fear when it leaves the protection of the garage is getting rear ended and totaling our camper.

Glad you were not hurt and you got everything repaired but what a hassle!

The insurance company is handling the negotiation but I am not reimbursed until they finish.

I agree with your fear. I have followed several trailer builds documented on line that took several years and MANY hours of craftsmanship. It would be soul crushing for a crash to destroy all that work.
84 days in the shop?
Why so long?
Waiting on parts?
I am glad your up and running and ok.
People don't even try to hide when texting while driving.
Are you trying to get me riled up?;) I could go on for pages. The Honda recommended shop I took it to:
- Scheduled drop off 2 weeks out (up to 5 weeks earlier than some other local shops)
- Cancelled first drop off upon my arrival
- Transferred truck to shop 30 miles away
- Did not touch truck for 1.5 weeks (checking on parts delivery - something I asked about prior to drop off)
- Claimed 1+ week shipping time for parts
- Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year holidays
I think that basically they want to get your vehicle in their hands and then have little motive to finish promptly.
