The SC State Parks system has changed from having a flat rate for campsites to a system where the cost increases as the number of sites available in a campground decreases. The old supply and demand model. So if you want to camp at a SC State Park make your reservations as far in advance as possible, if you don't you could be paying double what your neighbor paid.

Let the powers to be know your feelings, if enough people complain the pols usually start to listen. I hope Fl doesn't start doing crazy stuff like that. It is just about the money they want to waste on some project.

Well, that is fricken lovely... It will take 42.7 seconds for Reserve America & the rest of the campgrounds to catch on to this....

That sucks. So for a last minute reservation you will be paying more for (presumably) a crappier site.
And this is why I see this failing in the long run. Personally, I would opt for a private campground before I paid excessively for a sub-par site in a state park. I predict a lot of empty sites and an overall drop in revenue.

Yeah, I don't see that working very well. People will just go over the state line to do their camping rather than feel like they're getting ripped off.

The only business model where that works is airflight - and even that has a ton of variables.

Hopefully it's just a temporary thing that will fail quickly.H

Sending in complaints will help. Also, send letters to your state legislature and governor detailing how this is unfair, impractical, and will lose the State a lot of money, and let your newspapers and tv news know. Departments are a lot more likely to quickly reverse a plan when it gets bad publicity from those entities when it blows up that way. And the blow up happens quickly before they become invested in their "improvement".

Has anyone had a hard time finding a park where you can just at a whim go for a weekend and not have to reserve a year out!!!!!

I'd never go camping if I had to do that. Thankfully, it's not at all necessary here in Washington.

In most if not all states that would depend on what kind of camping you want to do, what time of year it is, and distance from tourist traps.

I have had no problem getting into a Fl. State Park and hopefully won't have a problem in the future. I personally think that any state that does as SC is doing will have problems as the Campers will not put up with it for very long.

The only thing that will reverse their (money generating) decision is for them to start LOSING money by people not camping there - government couldn't care less about people bitching and whining as long as they're still paying!

But you still have to tell them WHY you aren't camping there. Otherwise they will come to their own conclusions - and that will just make things worse.

The ones on the beaches are always hard to get a spot. I usually book a year in advance to get the sites we want. We do have lots of beautiful state parks that are at springs or rivers, though, and I can always get a site at those.

If Florida ever starts this crap like SC is doing, I will put the propane tanks back on the pup and start boondocking. This SC system makes me 100% sure I will never be camping there. I'll skip right over it and go to NC.
