Funny that you brought this up. I just put an Apple Airtag on my camper. Working very well.

Full Disclosure, I do sell GPS trackers :)

WHY YOU SHOULD NOT BE USING AN AIRTAG
TO TRACK YOUR ASSETS

When it comes to GPS tracker for car, AirTags are not compatible at all. Tracking a car is entirely different from tracking lost things around your house or neighborhood. Car moves fast and keeps on moving but your AirTags will take a considerable amount of time to update the location.

GPS tracking devices are purpose-built for tracking vehicles and have robust features. Features explicitly designed for fleet management include real-time tracking, geofencing, and driver behavior monitoring.

A GPS tracking device provides live location tracking, enabling you to keep track of your vehicles' whereabouts at all times. This feature is especially useful if you need to locate a missing vehicle quickly.

Another advantage of GPS tracking devices is that they offer real-time alerts. By using a GPS tracking device, you can configure notifications for events such as movement, geofence violations, or location changes. Additionally, these alerts can be instantly transmitted to your mobile phone or email, allowing you to take swift action in case of any problems with your vehicles.

Air tags also occasionally chirp when not in range of your phone for 8 or so hours which can allert someone to their presence as well as drain the battery a little faster unless you open them and disable the speaker. I have them on a couple cats who try to escape the house occasionally and the tags chirp if I turn off the Bluetooth on my phone for too long.

I clipped the speaker so no chirping.

@Homeless I not really concerned with the real-time tracking that a GPS would provide. Over the last two weeks of using the Airtag on the camper (which is at a storage yard), it has been pinged on average of every 15 minutes. The only thing I wish Apple would update the software with is an alert for when the tag location has changed when not in range of the parent device (my iPhone). Perhaps this feature exists and I just have not yet found the option.
