Lift Modification

Hello all.
I've got a 02 Jayco Qwest 8u.
Manual crank to lift and lower. Located up front just behind the jack.
Square into square on right. Ratchet winch device.

Basics on the A up front. Room for 1 Propane tank and a Battery.

If I need to store something specific for the camper i need to put it inside the camper and hope that it doesn't slide around while on the Happy Highway to a campsite.

I am looking at WHAT to put up front to be able to add storage.
But my one problem is the manual crank.
I thought about a 2" receiver tray. NOPE.
It was suggested that I get a truck tool box. Metal kind. Nope.

Crank handle... yeah.

Ok then.
I have viewed several options on Pinterest.
Some were bought from a company and bolted or welded.
Some were built to fit.

My question is this....
Has anybody retrofitted, upgraded or even redesigned a device to replace the manual crank on this Pop-up.
I have seen attachments for a HD drill for everything else. But, sadly, not for this application.

I figure that if I can resole the crank and crank handle "working area" I can put anything up there.

Any ideas ??

Have a great summer folks

I don't know how you'd feel about securing a temporary roof top rack on your roof but it worked well for me when I used the PUP full time. I once had it slide back a bit in travel, but when I'd run a strap forward I never had an issue:

Did you leave the rack on the roof when PUP was opened ?
I’m looking for ideas for a permanent storage solution.
But I must get by the manual lift situation.

My Jayco 10 uses a similar crank situation. I am using a HD drill with high torque/slow speed from HF with an adapter from Socket Genie. It lifts just fine, although you do have to watch it and not go too fast. My DW is watching the green cord as I do it and making sure I don't go up too much. I finish the lift by hand cranking with the handle the last turn or two.

PERFECT. !!!
I’ll investigate
I’ve seen a video where someone designed a string “gauge” with similar equipment to raise their top. They also stated that they set it up to give the lift the last couple cranks.

Thanks

Hard to tell in your pictures but if your pup has a back bumper I saw where someone attached a couple of amo boxes to the back bumper somehow. So long as you don't put much heavy stuff it shouldn't be a problem. Attaching a large PVC to the bumper is also an option.

I've stared at that bumper so many times.
Ammo boxes is a great idea.
Fabricate something for two scissor/stabilizer jacks and a bike rack.

Thanks

No. You slide the rack off the roof before you open it, which is nice because I'm not adding more weight for the roof to lift. The Clamshell and the blue bin are on the ground, were you can get at them. I would simply slide the wooden ladder under the PUP. This is my permanent extra storage solution. It doesn't need to be bolted down to be a permanent plan. Cheers!

I use a socket genie on my Jayco. My winch is in theback right corner though, not up front like yours. You can use a drill to do it, but I strongly advocate for using the handle for the last couple inches. You don’t want to screw up the system by over winching either way.

I haven’t looked, but you may be able to fabricate an extension to fit in the square socket. That would allow you to still crank with enough clearance to clear whatever bin/rack solution you place on the tongue.

Not sure if this would work in your situation or not.

I was thinking of that also. What are you looking to store? Anything in particular or just to have more space. When I had the pup, everything was in milk crates on the inside, a towl or outside matt in between for no movement. So they were lined up end to end.

Make the handle longer.
Ehhhhh. No.
Thought of that. The Female part of the socket would get MORE wallowed out. It's already a loose fit. Crank/winch lift system is in good shape. Leave it that way.
Socket Genie is in the mail.
Storage;
The PUP does not need much.
I would like to put the Canopy poles in my Storage box. Along with a Deep cell battery. Also have a new 7 pin connector with Junction box to go inside. If I can fit two Propane tanks inside with the regulator......Great.
Back bumper will grow some storage also. 6" PVC pipe with caps for a rug.

I'll take pics.

Lol, just a few things. Add a pvc pipe in the front also for the poles. Can a 30 lb tank fit? If so that and a battery is good side by side. Maybe extend the rails for the propane tanks a bit. That may give you enough for a 30 lb tank, battery and like a milk crate are to put stuff. If not you should be able to fit 2 tanks and a battery there. Look around , do some put the battery over the winch? Maybe thats an option also.

SON of a B..
What a great idea.
I'd have to find a welder tho.
That would make access to Battery REAL easy.
30# tank would probably fit on a horizontal mount. I'll have to look into height of that tank. Maybe it can go vertical. Make it easier to refill.
Angles on PUP, front and back, will allow for PVC pipe storage. All canopy poles are two piece, so, maybe a full width PVC pipe with a divider. Yeah, that's an idea.
