The park service considering this starting 2023. They cant charge tolls and entrance fees but the can charge for parking. plus $36.00 camping. more to follow.

I was just there, and parking was absolutely insane. People parking anywhere and everywhere because the lot was full. If they charge for parking I suspect you are going to see the roads even worse with people squeezing and blocking streets more than they do now.
Personally I'm ok to pay a little more money camping if it goes to the upkeep of the park. Shenandoah national park in my state you have to pay an entrance fee and yes separate from the camping cost. Haven't been up that way since Covid so not sure if it's changed any.

I'll only go to GSMNP in the winter due to the crowding. Cades Cove is great under a dusting of snow.

It's been years since I visited the Smokies, from what I remember it's always been heavy visited in summer months.
