Yuck. Yuck. And Yuck. They do make good hand buzzers for the kids, but thats about it.

A friend who lives about 70 miles south of Indianapolis is expecting to start seeing them any day. The Skeptics Guide to the Universe podcast said in the most dense areas it could be 1.5 million per acre emerging. We were at the Illinois Highland games during an emergence a number of years ago and they seem to really like bagpipes. The judges had to give all the competing pipers a bugs handicap in the scoring that year.

We camped near Champaign, IL during an emergence about 15 years ago. Being a teenage girl, I was terrified but my mom said we paid to camp so we are staying! I’ll never forget the deafening roar. My dad didn’t mind them and came in the camper with 4 on his back (he didn’t even notice). I was screaming while my mom picked them off. I like to think I’ve toughened up since then but still not a fan of bugs that big. Ugh
