I'd still put a trailer hitch on a miata. Seriously, they stock them [LOL]

I put a hitch on most of my vehicles. I have a hitch on my `17 Prius. ;) For now it is just for a bike rack, but after warranty expires I may wire in some lights and occasionally use it to move a <500lb trailer short distances.

To answer the 'which tow vehicle' question, well a Tundra obviously. ;)

Our 2014 F150 with the 3.5L V6 Ecoboost is an awesome TV and daily driver. Driven properly  , it still gets 20-22 mpg's without the camper. It pulls our 3000# a-frame with no problem even in the mountains and is already set up for towing with the factory brake controller and transmission oil cooler.

We love our new Pathfinder. It had the hd tow package and pulls our new to us 24 ft Cougar by keystone. Honestly I had to look behind us to make sure it was still there. Lots of power for the uphills and it has a tow function that changes the shift points. It also has a downhill assist that helps slow the vehicle down. We bought the platinum version it has the tvs in the seats for the kids with wireless headphones. Nice feature is you can use usb hdmi rca jacks or dvd. If you hook up a different device kids can watch different shows at the same time and adults can watch what they want up on the dash wjen parked. Though there is a workaround so your passenger can watch a movie while you drive.
We love it so much we are thinking of selling the 2013 escape and getting another pathfinder.

Ok newbie here. I'd like to share a warning based on recent experience.

We just traded my '14 Fusion Energi (62-80actual mpg) in on a '15 Explorer Sport (3.5 L. twin turbo , 6 SPD xmsn) to tow our '96 Coleman /Fleetwood Laredo.

The reason? Our '16 Nissan Rogue AWD. Nissan states in a tech advisory that the transmission/cvt/ transaxle/ drivetrain, whichever it may be, is built in partnership with Renault and is not designed to handle the strain of pulling a 1000 lb trailer. Doing any towing at all voids the warranty. However they do offer a class 1 hitch to attach bike racks or equipment box carriers.

So, Nissan owners be warned. Carefully chose your platform if you're loyal to that brand.

We had good luck towing a 1,700 lb. PUP with a TrailBlazer, but they're no longer made. They were, I think, the last small/mid-sized SUV that was body on frame. It was wearing out and needed a lot of repairs, so we traded it in on a used Colorado. Love having a compact truck. Tows our HW PUP easily yet works well as a daily driver. Admittedly, the half-tons get the same gas mileage, but the Colorado isn't as wide or long which helps with parking. Love it.
