What State? When is your first 2023 trip? What will be the predicted weather?

Sadly, our first scheduled trip isn't until June (wife's surgery, etc cutting into our travel time). That trip will be a week long trip to Four Mile Creek State Park in NY. Looking forward to it, so much to do in the area plus it will be an interesting experiment...our first "long" trip without any hookups (previously our no hookup stay was just 2 nights...this one will be a week). Still on the fence about adding solar or getting a small propane fired Inverter generator (the latter would allow us to use the microwave).

Expected weather? Likely low 70's during day to low 50's at night with a cool breeze from off the lake (which we're adjacent to), so no AC shouldn't be a problem. No idea about the rain, although the climate prediction center is calling for normal amounts (average of 8 days with rain in June).

Weather at least will be nice, hope all goes well for your wife!

In post #17 above, I said that I was going camping with my son and his family the week of the 20th. We were all looking forward to it. The idea was to camp in Recardo campground in Red Rock Canyon and then ride the quads the 3 or so miles to the Dove Springs OHV area for a day of riding fun. Well, we checked the weather for that week. The lows for the whole week were going to be in the 30s, and the highs during the day will not get above 50 with high winds. So, as you may have guessed, we canceled the whole trip. We are going to have to wait for better weather.

Sometimes when they say 40* then add the wind, it feels like -20! Sorry you have to change your plans, but I bet you'll be a whole lot happier. 😉

I have camped in the snow before, so I am used to the cold. But the grandchildren would not be happy sitting in their camper all day just to say they were camping. They would be far too cold riding on a quad in the wind. I don't really mind being inside all day when it is cold or snowy. I do a lot of family history writing and can work on my laptop all day. I had one book published a few years ago, but most of my books mainly involve family history and are mainly for family or close friends. I have also had several stories published in magazines. In fact, I just received a couple of copies of a magazine published in France that featured the story of my father's World War II adventures with the 25th Fighter Sq. in China. I can't read a word in it! I write them, print them, and bind them myself. Sometimes I can write better when I don't have the noise of my home life. There will be other camping trips when the weather improves.

I believe you made a good decision. Hopefully the rescheduled trip will included better weather predictions.

But the grandchildren would not be happy sitting in their camper all day just to say they were camping.
Am thinking of myself as a child and, to a similar but lesser degree, as an adult. Have never taken well to being stuck in a hotel room or camper all day or really anytime more than a few hours waiting. No one wanted to be around me as a bored, hyperactive child... not even me since I would be beside myself. The adult me can now hold still for a while but after two hours the "I'm bored" whining starts. lol How my partner manages to camp with me in the often rainy Southeast is nothing short of a miracle.

Just got back from our first trip, which was unplanned til last week!
We have a Border Collie foster dog and wanted to see how she would be camping next week, since she gets super excited seeing other animals (even on TV).
Nice weather at Lums Pond and saw a Pileated Woodpecker!
The campground was full and there were 3 popups and 2 tents(both had chimney stoves).

That is indeed a scary person to behold. Words my brother said many many times. It was like an all hands on deck situation in our house. The only way the family managed to go on long camping trips was if we left around midnight so The boys were sleeping and often had to be carried to the car. they would then sleep for many many hours. Playgrounds or huge fields were then found immediately upon them waking. After expelling some energy the folks can sometimes get another hour before doing that all over again. Bonus if the boys ended up falling back asleep. As teenagers is was triple times worse so all trips stopped except for our annual summer beach trip. Folks spent Thousands at this resort campground that had everything. boys didn’t have time to be bored here as it had everything. Even the drive down got them so hyped up they didn’t think they were stuck in a car. Drive back home however was downright awful. Sorry to the OP for sidetracking the thread.

Just wanted to mention heat retention is critical in a popup if you want to camp in the cold. Check out the cold weather section. In short put reflectix in the windows. I used closed cell foam (floor tiles) under The mattress this help keeps the cold from seeping through the mattress. I was able to get by with an electric catalytic space heater.
Thank you so much i am definitely going to try all of it

Well the weather forecasts were mostly WRONG. Supposed to be dreary and rainy. NOT.😁 Most days were sunny enough for the solar panel and none were a total washout. It was DELIGHTFUL. Most days there were only 2-3 other campers but the horses came through every day. And the Killdees were vocal at night. 8 days in one place is a “record” and it was bliss. Surf sounds all night. Doesnt get any better. (Assateague National Seashore)

If anyone needs a total off grid heater system, Buddy heater, 20# tank and a hose from outside to inside, are it.

I cancelled my early May trip to Colorado, weather conditions were really tertiary. My friend's knee replacement was put off until then, so I'd like to be on-call. My husband will probably go to a conference, which would have made trying to park the trailer when I got home an issue. (Our driveway is pretty much the most difficult campsite we encounter.)
Unless we come up with something in the meantime, which is doubtful, our first trip is now planned for Memorial Day weekend, to the KOA in Silver City, NM. We'll play it by ear, we'd like to do the Gila Cliff dwellings again, but if it's too busy, we'll skip it. We generally try to only go somewhere relatively remote for holiday weekends, but we really wanted to get out.
Weather should be pleasant.

I don't mind camping in the cold or rain, but this damn wind has got to go! 20 to 30 mile an hour winds almost every day out here on the Mojave desert. Not good in a popup!

I love Palmer. I wanted to move there but my wife said have fun without me. I have no idea when my first trip will be. Weather here has not been good and predicting bad weather for the rest of the month. We are planning a trip to Goblin Valley SP (Utah) on the 1st weekend of April, weather permitting. Everywhere we go is on dirt roads and I HATE towing in mud/snow so hopefully it will have dried out by then.

One reason I love this website is that it gives me places to put on my camping “to do” list...

We are planning a trip to Goblin Valley SP (Utah)

And this one ^^ has just been added. It looks so cool! Well no. It actually looks hot but really interesting & near many places of interest.
